On the Wealth of Nations
P.J. O’Rourke was our first client in 1995 with his book Age & Guile Beat Youth, Innocence and a Bad Haircut. Since then, we have sent him on what he fondly refers to as “the author tour death march” for hardcover and paperback publications of five subsequent books.

Our most recent efforts landed P.J. back on The New York Times bestseller list with the publication of On the Wealth of Nations. There is no doubt about it—the media loves to book P.J. as a guest not only because he is extremely good, but because he is rarely available. Unlike ubiquitous political “talking heads” who will comment on anything, P.J. only comes out for a reason—like a new book.

The key to our success with his latest book was timing. During the first week of the book’s launch, we were able to secure appearances on key media outlets that propelled the book onto the bestseller list. These appearances included a three-hour In Depth interview on C-Span2/ Book TV, a full hour on NPR’s Talk of the Nation and an interview on Marketplace. He also appeared on syndicated radio shows hosted by Jim Bohannon and Laura Ingraham, and Tucker Carlson on MSNBC TV. Fortunately, The New York Times Book Review chose to run their glowing review at the same time.

The campaign then rolled out into a ten-city tour, and further national media included a profile on PBS TV’s The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and appearances on that same network’s Tavis Smiley, CNBC TV’s Kudlow & Company—and even Al Jazeera America.
